Meeting “Howie D” in Pigg

Yesterday I was in my room with my friends copico and ☆kuu☆ when our chat was interrupted by a very surprising and unexpected visitor. Read it for yourself:

☆kuu☆
hello

Howie D
hey

Hieroglyph
hello

☆kuu☆
nice to meet you

Howie D
i’m howie d
from the backstreet boys

Hieroglyph
LOL!

I was never a fan of BSB or any other boy band. But I thought someone making a Pigg version of a now D-list celebrity was hilarious. I asked for a photo and his autograph and he obliged.

I didn’t tell him I wasn’t a fan until after. I asked him if he would kindly retire from music altogether. And with a flash he was gone … off to find AJ, Brian, Kevin, and Nick no less. I guess if New Kids On The Block can attempt a comeback so can they.

Howie D was pretty funny and polite. He said he was a “king of the 90s” and his speech was littered with a lot of hey girls, yos, and other stereotypical boy bandisms.

Today, his account has changed to the name Jack Dawson (Titanic). Maybe he’ll be Rick Astley next.

I have a sneaking suspicion, however, that his persona was created by the impish Pippa.

Repost: Zynga Shuts Down OMGPOP One Year After Acquiring It For $200M

By Greg Kumparak, 06/05/2013
Source: TechCrunch

As the dust begins to settle following yesterday’s massive, sweeping layoffs at Zynga, the extent of the damage is becoming more clear.

Remember when Zynga acquired OMGPOP last year for roughly $200M dollars? Yeah, OMGPOP essentially no longer exists.

According to tweets from company employees and the company’s Twitter account itself, most of the OMGPOP staff was let go, with their New York City office shuttered.

From OMGPOP’s former “VP of People”:

From its former Senior Community Manager:

From the company itself:

Zynga acquired OMGPOP at the height of its success, just as Draw Something — OMGPOP’s first real smash hit — was exploding onto handsets everywhere. By the time Zynga pushed an update to add their logo to the game, its popularity had already tapered.

Alas, it seems like the two companies never managed to find a comfortable way to sit together. We’ve heard previously that there was some pretty serious culture clash from day one — and just two months ago, OMGPOP CEO Dan Porter left the company after a statement he made during a panel was “taken out of context” to suggest that Zynga openly copies their competitors’ games. I didn’t realize that was still up for debate.

It’s unclear what Zynga intends to do with OMGPOP’s online gaming portal (the company’s primary focus before shfiting to mobile), and whether or not they’ll continue to use the OMGPOP brand.

I had drinks with a few now ex-Zynga’ers last night, most of whom were surprisingly upbeat about the whole thing. “The severance is enough to hold me over for a while,” said one “but most of my team had new jobs lined up by the time they left the building anyway.”

Countdown to The Sims Social and SimCity Social closures

EA games is killing its popular Facebook game titles The Sims Social and SimCity Social. The shocking announcement was made on April 15 in game and via fan pages and email.

As of today players have two weeks (14 days) to enjoy these games before they’re gone for good. EA says it will “reallocate development resources to other titles”.

I didn’t care much for SimCity Social, but The Sims Social was one of my favourite games. Its closing will be a big disappointment. The closure comes after a string of game obituaries including Zynga’s FishVille, PetVille, and Treasure Isle; Tiny Speck’s Glitch;  GAIA Online’s Summer Springs; and CyberAgent’s Tinier Me and my beloved Ameba Pico.

Zynga has announced further closures with Dream Zoo, Empires & Allies, TheVille and Zynga City by the end of June. [Update: June 6, 2013] Zynga is laying off 18% of its workforce and shutting down more offices. Read more.

In an attempt to thank The Sims Social and SimCity Social players for their loyaly EA sent other game offers to players by email on April 30 (click the images to take advantage of the offers):

Two weeks later these messages were send to player emails on May 15:

13-05-15-SCS-Sunset-EN

The message also promoted a new game title from PopCap Games, Plants Vs Zombies Adventures. This game officially launched on May 20.
